AT&T already does ota updates for Android phones.
The update notice tells you that the download will begin once you connect to wifi.
Keeps you from blowing through your data plan.
Makes sense that they would do it for the iPhone too.

Apple is a self absorbed organization that loves to publically bash other companies like Microsoft for not being responsive, open, hip, etc., then when it comes to incorporating a technology that people want/need, they drag the butts, remain non responsive and basically do nothing. I applaud Adobe for throwing this right back in Apple's face.

Frankly I don't know if Bluetooth would solve the wire problem. But your point is well taken a wireless drive would have its own advantages. Something would be needed of course as I'm not dismissing the need for an optical drive from time to time. My big problem with optical hardware is that it increases weight and decreases reliability...

I agree, but wireless doesn't nearly have the bandwidth necessary.

Think about it, Bluetooth is up to 3Mbps, Wireless is at 54Mbps, and your Firewire drive is 400Mbps.
And, while BT and WiFi can fluxuate, the data for hard-drives and optical drives must be constant in order to be useful. As cool as it would be streaming huge amounts of data is still beyond the current technology, even the WiMax standard is limited to around 100Mbps.

Apple's making a gamble with 802.11n, but they did the same thing with 802.11g and it worked rather well, some have stated that Apple's inclusion of 802.11g gear actually helped to force the issue.

[QUOTE=Sydde;12126014]Probably not, though, because then our tech-toy upgrade cycles would be much less regular, we would have to fix more stuff instead of replacing it, and there would simply not be enough margin to maintain the crucial upper class. So, yeah, practically speaking, we have to./QUOTE]

One wonders how Japan, the third largest economy in the world, does it?

They are just as tech-toy advanced as the United States... if not more.

And they manage to do it while spending only 0.9% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) of their GDP on defense ($46 billion) while the United States spends 4.3% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) ($663 billion).

How is China growing into the next economic superpower while only spending 2% (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures) of its GDP ($99 billion) on defense?

See, I think you have it backwards. You see our massive defense spending as propping up our economy. I think a closer examination will reveal that it is instead is instead, dragging us down.

This is almost Microsoft-like: at what point does the public simply become so sick of badly written software from an arrogant company that historically captured a large market share and is now doing everything possible to stifle innovation that it simply moves on?

WHAT are you talking about?! Adobe clearly isn't the one "stifling" innovation here.

*EDIT* wait, i think that's what you were saying. sorry. :o

At no point did I say that Apple (and AAPL) would not benefit greatly from faster hardware.

I'm simply stating that talking about it here won't change the path that Apple is on.

Perhaps you may want to direct your concerns to Apple, Moto Semiconductor, IBM, etc.

This is a rumors site occasionally perused by Apple legal, and maybe some employees looking for a laugh.

If you want Apple to continue to be "behind" (is that a gentle enough word for you?) in the hardware sector, then that's fine.

I don't, no one here does, but I could type 'til I'm blue in the face here, and it wouldn't change the course that Apple is on.

Oddly enough, The Steve is not sitting in his office, with a bunch of processor designers, eagerly awaiting your (or my) next post.

But the FACT is that most Apple users, DON'T. They want to see Apple competing with PC hardware properly. Apple is already such a small part of the market and IMO, they need to increase speed to

Agreed, speed would help gain new market share. Never said anything to the contrary.

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Give the people what they want" ? Well most people want speed and numbers.

Most people want cheap computers too. Most people want a lot of things. I'm all for better numbers, as long as they are performance and not GHz based.

If we artificailly inflate numbers at the cost of performance (PIV) we have more GHz doing the same amount of work. If we lower margins and Apple quits being a botique company, quality will suffer, profits will suffer, and the overall effect won't be good.

If Apple has a 30% share in the future, do you think we'll remain virus free? Do you think we'll get more attention from the pop-up spyware writers? Do you think the hardware will still be built to as high of a spec?

And anyone who has said "I like your style, Nipsy" in this thread, no you don't, you just like the fact that he's defending your precious Macs. You guys whine and complain about what Apple's needs to do right, but as soon as someone points out that Apple is doing something wrong, you suddenly completely disagree with the very points that you yourselves were making. It's pretty pathetic.

Actually, I beleive I may be getting kudos for writing clear responses, provinding links, admitting I'm wrong when I make a mistake, and speaking with a modicum of business acumen. I'm intelligent enough to know that Apple does not have the market cap to fully control their chip evolution, and you, it seems, are not.

In case you still believe that it is Apple's fault, I will make an offer right now.

Call Motorola, order 2000 2.4GHz G5s (you can order IBM 970s if you'd like). Send me the bill, and I'll upgrade eveyone's machine for free.

The one thing to remember is that this is a Developer's Conference so there is not going to be a lot of pizazz with flashy announcements. There was not a whole lot of new mind-blowing things announced so he could have been a little bit bored with it.

Bored with such trivial things as THE OPERATING SYSTEM that runs his entire corporation! I highly doubt that's the case.

Surely Apple can't combine everything into something like http://www.macnn.com/blogs/?p=98.

    Or can they?

I normally don't pay attention to Apple patent applications, but this one's a doozie!

Everything from 100% full screen to virtual keys, to selecting different modalities depending on orientation(!), to sensitivity to force of touch, to squeezing, to miniDVD drive, to ....

    WOW!

    <edit:>
Or maybe it's really the iTablet? Larger form factor than an iPod? They talk about various operating systems. Maybe it'll be OS X?
    </edit>

Movies purchased from the iTunes Store can't be burned to a DVD or VCD that will play in a DVD player or Video CD.

How is apple service different from Amazon?. Other than a pretty interface (last time i checked, pretty interfaces did not save me money or help pay the bills).. what's different?. Is the pricing different?.. are the restrictions different?.. why shouldn't I buy from amazon.. what happened to "when apple comes out with their service, they will kill amazon"??

    Lame.

It's appropriate that Toys'r'Us would carry the iPad 2, an overpriced toy.

While the iPad certainly can be a great toy, anyone who believes that a powerful, intuitive, easy to use tablet computer is only a toy is a complete idiot.

No more PowerBook. Love the new Mac Mini, I would put in an SSD, but they're still too expensive, and I really don't need one. Its extremely quiet anyway.

Stock Mac Mini 2.4ghz + 4gb of RAM (Crucial off Newegg)
20" Cinema Display (I'm going to mount that powerbrick behind the desk, I hate looking at it)
    Bose Companion 2 speakers
    64gb iPad WiFi
    160gb iPod Classic

    Wow! I love your setup.
    The Mac Mini looks amazing
not to mention all that other nice stuff on your desk :)

I don't see this mentioned here, but Apple have told MacWorld (http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/08/17/wirelesshack/index.php) - my bolding:

Despite SecureWorks being quoted saying the Mac is threatened by the exploit demonstrated at Black Hat, they have provided no evidence that in fact it is, Apple Director of Mac PR, Lynn Fox, told Macworld. To the contrary, the SecureWorks demonstration used a third party USB 802.11 devicenot the 802.11 hardware in the Maca device which uses a different chip and different software drivers than those on the Mac. Further, SecureWorks has not shared or demonstrated any code in relation to the Black Hat-demonstrated exploit that is relevant to the hardware and software that we ship.
