I don't know about the bottom one, but the top is the Intel Core Duo chip. Someone thinks it may say Intel Core 2 Duo, but that's another post entirely. :p

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

No, but enough sites do make use of it that Apple really should allow the CONSUMER to make the decision to enable or disable it. I know the Apple fanboys will disagree, but I wouldn't expect anything less from those guys.

    Thank you.

I think letting consumers decide is stupid. They dont have degrees in technical areas of computing. That's what engineers get paid for, to handle tech stuff. Consumer pays to have technology that works.

Most people here are missing the big picture. I'm pretty old and have witnessed the changes in the tech sector. Back in '01 a lot of laptops were made or at least assembled in the USA, and they were quality products, but with cheap foreign labor most global companies could not resist the couple of percent they could add to their profit margins by moving overseas. The company I worked for made laptops for a major name, but they closed the plant here to save between 3.00 and 6.00 dollars per unit, a very small percentage of the overall value. A company like Apple could easily, make and assemble products here, the profit margin on an iPhone is around 60%, but if they did that then there profit margin would only be 50%. In 2000, American EXPORTED more high tech components than it imported. Here is the .gov source (http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/balance/c0007.html#2000). We have competed and still can. As the Yuan rises against the dollar because the Chinese government can no longer keep it down the price on all these goods will rise, this is happening right now, the Chinese government can't combat inflation and rising food prices. So, companies like Foxconn are forced to look for cheaper labor.

Reset PRAM, apparently that broke CoreDuoTemp sensor because mine is reading 12C, iStatPro is reading 12 C as well, but smcFanControl is reading 72 C. Week 27 MacBook by the way. So my suggestion is, if your MacBook has no issues or you are fine with how it is running right now, DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE.

My Macbook also has false CPU Temp readings with all apps running Speedit. That is CoreDuoTemp, iStat widgets etc...
smcFanControl uses a different sensor. My guess is the new firmware somehow disables the CPU core sensors (there is one in every core) and uses the other one instead. So the values SpeeIt gets refresh only every time you reboot.

So what would you do with this edu discount option, now that everything's been updated to the C2D line:

13.3" MBP (White - mid level) for $1199
    13.3 MBP (Black) for $1399
    OR
    15.4 MBP for $1799.

What's the sweet spot -- if you're doing all the basics plus occasional video editing of short commercial projects and the periodic photoshop use?

I mainly hope that they go up to 1GB of RAM with this. Maybe a minor hard-drive upgrade too. Either way, I'm buying.

But it looks that it'll be soon, and I'm freakin' excited.

Although I hate to say... Intel will keep updating and within a few months there'll be a new "best processor". I'm mainly hoping that I won't regret buying this as it's instantly upgraded.

I see. I wonder who conducted this sorely-needed poll? I bet they banned "Ahab the Arab" too.

If this is true, I would say it's pretty stupid, to say the least...same for "Perfekte Welle" from Juli in Germany, at the time of the Asian tsunami...

Time Machine seems more like the Shadow Copies on Server only on a local level rather than a network drive. (example attached)

I'm assuming they will use a form of Single Instance Storage with TM, so you have one copy of the file and only the deltas from any changes to reduce space requirements.

I use Shadow Copies on our network all the time, it is very handy. The concept and implementation of Time Machine is not original. Apple simply slapped Eye Candy on it and raved about how it is a revolution.

Outside of my company's network, which has tons of server space, I don't know if I would want Time Machine to automatically make backups. Guess I am just old school and prefer to manually make backups. That way I am maximizing my personal hardrive space.

Does anyone know what the formatted capacities are of each (2 gig, 4 gig, 8 gig).

I can't find where I read it, but somewhere it looked like the formatting ate up 600 mb of space - YIKES!

Can anyone please clarify this, confirm, refute? Thanks!

You don't lose too much to formatting, you "lose' space because computers incorrectly use GB as a storage term instead of GiB.

Take the capacity in GB, multiply it by 0.93 to give you GiB (which the computer will report as GB even though using an SI prefix "giga" is inappropriate for a binary measurement) and that will give you the capacity. Anything lost beyond the initial 7% of the drive is due to formatting. On a regular HDD the difference isn't much but on an iPod it's a fair bit more due to the OS, built-in applications and stuff like that.

An 8GB iPod, if nothing was loaded on it (ie, just a blank 8GB HDD) would report a capacity of ~7.44GB on the computer. It should report 7.44GiB. Don't worry, you still get the 8x10^9 bytes you paid for, it's just a stupid quirk of all computers that they report binary measures in SI units.

8GB = ~7.44GiB. But your computer will say 7.44GB which lends the illusion of lost space.

Are you insane or just trolling? You're complaining because the FREE iPod that Apple is giving to you for FREE is the previous version that was just updated today, even though you're getting it for FREE!!! For you to complain about this makes YOU the rude one. You sound like a spoiled brat whining and complaining because the porche mummy and dada bought you for christmas is black instead of red. There's just no pleasing some people.

    RELAX dude!

Not everyone get one for free! It's only in US!
I can only get a discount on the old model! And no discount at all for the new.

OK, so their inital aim was implicitly to get in-the-face of smug Mac users. And then Apple "leans" on them, so they go all nicey-nice and 'decide' to a USB wifi card instead? Doesn't this seem slightly odd to anyone else?

No one is making you pay for CS 5.5. Just wait and buy CS6, CS7, etc as you normally would have.

That isn't the issue mate, the issue is that Lion is around the corner and I'll bet my bottom dollar Adobe will damn well use their launch of 5.5 to justify dropping support for CS5 when it comes to Lion. So what does one do - hold back on Lion so one can keep with CS5 or upgrade to CS5.5 just to get Lion support? don't think it isn't going to happen - look at CS4 and the fact it took MONTHS for Adobe to finally fix the data corruption bug in Fireworks where it would crash on exit when running on Snow Leopard.

Sorry, I want to move to Lion as soon as it is released because there are some friggin awesome features that I really like but there are scum sucking a-holes like Adobe who will use it as yet ANOTHER reason to milk their customers.

Adobe keep whining about Apple and how they keep getting 'screwed over' and yet when are we going to see Adobe stop screwing over its customers, both Windows and Mac OS X, using the ever so slightest system change to justify charging an upgrade when what they should be doing is issuing updates and supporting their products for up to 5 years like Microsoft does (Adobe is a big enough company to carry that cost).

Yes, that is a very nerdy/geeky thing to do. "Zune"-ing music wirelessly is only something geeks can come up with, whereas Steve's suggestion of sharing earbuds is so much cooler and, dare I say it, sexually suggestive! ;)
As much as I would like that feature for file transfer, it is too geeky and I'm sure it will be too cumbersome for your average consumer to use.

I don't play Halo multiplayer for a couple of reason. The main one being that i suck at it. But the other reason is the wait time to get into a game and then out of it to get into another. I dont have that problem with Modern Warefare 2 so I am just wondering if its me and my crappy connection or what?
I've never had much issue with the time finding a match, either starting out, or between games. I think the default timer between games is a 45 seconds. They give a little time so people can drop out if they want, check stats, etc. After that, it will start the search for however many people are needed. Keep in mind though, if you have specified any settings within your game search (skill, connection, language), it will take longer for their servers to find an appropriate match for you.

I don't know if you like Firefight mode, but they have matchmaking available for that. That way, you aren't competing against other people, so you shouldn't feel too outclassed. And since the max players for that is 4, it finds matches super quick. Maybe give that a shot and see how it goes.
